The Test of Time

January 22, 2025

Enjoy this week's "Investor Insights," a weekly newsletter that highlights the financial news you need and provides tips and tricks for making better investment decisions.

  • The best-performing stocks rarely survive the test of time. Only six of the top twenty largest S&P 500 companies in 2000 remain on the list today (Microsoft, Walmart, Exxon Mobil, Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble, and Home Depot). *1
  • The average U.S. insurance premium rose by 33%, from $1,902 in 2020 to $2,530 in 2023, reflecting the increase in billion-dollar natural disasters. In the 1980s, the U.S. averaged 3.3 such disasters per year, but from 2022 to 2024, the average was 24.3 per year. 2
  • Historically, bull markets last 55 months and provide 202% cumulative returns. From October 2022 to December 2024, the current bull market is only 26 months old and has provided 74% returns. *3
  • Technology stocks have increased the size of the U.S. stock market. With a market capitalization of $60 trillion, the U.S. stock market, which now has 47% of its composition in technology stocks, is 4x the size of the next biggest stock market. *4
